We build strength, stability, and self-reliance through housing.
Habitat for Humanity builds houses in Kanawha & Putnam counties and offers its community volunteer opportunities. We educate homebuyers and homeowners so that everyone can learn how to maintain their homes for life. Our Habitat houses are built largely by a volunteer workforce and the homebuyers in our program. Once construction is completed, Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam will sell the newly constructed house to a qualified homebuyer at no profit. Habitat homes are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages.
All monthly mortgage payments are paid directly to Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam and go into a revolving fund that helps to build even more Habitat homes. In addition to a $600 down payment and low monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest anywhere between 250 and 500 hours of their own labor – “sweat equity” – into building or repairing their homes.
Our houses are modestly sized. They are large enough for the family’s needs, but small enough to keep construction and maintenance costs to a minimum.
We only use quality, locally available building materials. Habitat home designs reflect the local climate and culture.
The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes and no-profit loans make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat houses.
We're building a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
