COVID-19 Response Updates

News & Events

July 7, 2020

  • Our office is open by appointment only. Call 304-720-0141 if you need assistance.
  • Our Charleston and Teays Valley ReStore locations are open and operating under current health department guidelines and state mandates.

As a sustainable funding source for Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam, safety has always been a part of what we do. Now more than ever, we want to stay safe so that we can stay open.

To help protect our employees and customers, effective July 6, 2020, all ReStore employees and customers must wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose, at all times while in the ReStore. This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2. Individuals who are unable to wear a face covering due to a medical condition may inquire about a special accommodation, but will not be allowed to enter the ReStore during normal business hours.

We've widened all of our aisles to make social distancing easier, and created a new self-service loading zone so you can quickly exit the store with your larger items. We've recycled donated wood, windows, and glass to make germ barriers and updated both registers to keep checkouts moving smoothly. We now have a signature-free payment option.

The parking area is now behind our building. We've also moved our entrance to the rear of our building off of Young Street to better control the flow of customers entering the store.

The Young Street side of our building is now a customer self-loading zone. Our new exit and loading zone allows you to pay for your items and quickly exit the store to load them into your vehicle. To maintain a contact-free shopping experience we ask all customers to plan on loading their own purchases.

CDC guidance shows that most viruses do not survive long on surfaces. Now, in addition to our normal cleaning routine, all donations we receive will be quarantined for 72 hours before being placed on the sales floor.

  • The Charleston Habitat ReStore is expected to reopen on July 6th.
  • The Teays Valley Habitat ReStore is expected to reopen on July 7th.

The Habitat ReStore provides funding to Habitat for Humanity allowing Habitat to partner with local homebuyers to help them build their houses. Our operations have changed, our mission remains. Now more than ever, we are seeing the importance of home.  Due to the precautions associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our Habitat ReStore has been closed since late March. However, reopening our ReStore locations is the first step to resuming full operations.

We have a few new processes in place and some areas of the ReStore will look a little different to help keep our customers, donors, and staff safe during this time. We will have to limit customers in the ReStore, which we understand may be frustrating - but please have patience with us. Aisles have been expanded and the store has been cleaned and disinfected.  ReStore staff will be screened prior to entering the facility for their safety and yours.

Our stores are now cash and carry. We cannot hold any merchandise. There is a new loading zone for customers to easily load their purchases.

Our administrative office in Charleston is open by appointment only.

We are, of course, closely watching the Governor's updates, local public health agency updates, and the public's response. Habitat will modify our reopening response as appropriate as the situation may change.

June 2020

  • Charleston ReStore Remodeling Continues
  • Teays Valley ReStore Remodel Begins

Our reopening plan is moving forward as planned. Now that nonessential businesses are being allowed to resume operations, we have been planning and preparing our staff and ReStore to reopen.  Even though the government is allowing additional businesses to reopen, it does not mean COVID-19 is no longer a threat to our staff, volunteers, and community.  We have consulted with Healthcare Professionals, reviewed guidance from state and local governments and Habitat for Humanity International, and are putting new protocols in place to keep everyone safe while shopping.

We are excited to be reactivating operations based on a set of protocols that continue to prioritize the health and safety of everyone involved.  We will continue to monitor relevant public health data, local and state laws, and adjust our operations accordingly.

May 2020

  • Charleston ReStore Reopening Update

With added safety measures, The Charleston ReStore is planning to reopen during the first part of July. We are not accepting donations at this time, and our store remains closed to shoppers until then.

The Teays Valley ReStore boutique will reopen only after a successful reopening of the Charleston ReStore. At this time there is no date set for the Teays Valley ReStore to reopen.

We are, of course, closely watching the Governor's updates, local public health agency updates, and the public's response. Habitat will modify our reopening response as appropriate as the situation may change.
