Partnering with Habitat for a Better Life

Homeownership Program

Applications are not currently being accepted. Please join our mailing list to receive announcements about the homeownership program by Email.
Habitat uses three criteria to determine whether or not an applicant is ready to take part in its homeownership program.
  • Need.

Applicants must demonstrate a need for affordable housing. Need is difficult to define and applies uniquely to everyone. Overcrowding, poor condition, unavailability, unsafe all describe situations that may demonstrated need.

  • Willingness to partner.

Applicants must be able to commit to partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha and Putnam County. Successful homebuyers must complete the nine-week Master Homeowner Program, complete a nine-week financial literacy program, and earn at least 250 hours per adult of sweat equity in the household helping build their own house or the house of another Habitat Homebuyer.

  • Ability to pay.

Applicants must be able to provide documentation that they are able to afford paying a monthly mortgage payment. Habitat does not give away houses; houses are purchased from Habitat with a zero-interest mortgage.
