Hello Spring, Goodbye Clutter

It’s time to get motivated after spending the winter in a more restful state. As cold March days give way to mild April nights, more and more people are turning to home projects to break out of their winter hibernation. Spring cleaning is the most common, and easiest, thing you can do now as the weather still warms up. No one really looks forward to spring cleaning, but it helps to think about the final result: a clean and fresh house!

You may feel unsure where to start, but get your spring cleaning started by removing the clutter from your home. It’s as simple as taking stock of what you have and haven’t used lately. Outside of seasonal items, anything that you haven’t used in the last year is probably a safe bet to donate.

Divide your household items into separate piles with “keep”, “toss out”, and “donate” labels to make sure nothing is done away with improperly. It may seem hard at first, but once you get started it you’ll likely be surprised at how much you really don’t need.

Don’t just toss all of your unwanted belongings in the trash. Remember that “donate” pile. A lot of the items that have accumulated in your home are probably still in good shape and could be used by someone else. You can donate your gently used furniture to Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Most ReStores can arrange pickup for large items that won’t fit into your car. They also accept things like light fixtures, lumber, sinks, toilets, bathtubs and home goods.

Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam recently founded our Legacy Society to recognize the importance of estate gifts in accomplishing our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to call home. Our Legacy Society creates new opportunities and preserves our future through planned gifts. These gifts can qualify for significant tax deductions and include bequests, charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts.

Tax BenefitsWhy Include a Bequest in Your Will or Trust?

Naming Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam as a beneficiary in an IRA, life insurance policy, other financial account or in your will is one critical way that you can help provide for future stability and growth.

The reasons that donors make charitable bequests are generally as varied as the donors themselves, but perhaps one common denominator is a sincere desire to give back to their community. Other advantages include:

It’s easy. The easiest way to leave a Legacy Gift and become a Legacy Society member is through your will.

It’s revocable. With a bequest, you are not actually making a gift until your death. Until then, you are free to alter your plans, eliminating the worry that you might make a commitment you could later regret.

It’s tax-smart. Your estate is entitled to an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction for bequests to qualified charitable organizations.

A provision in a will may be made using the following language:

I give, devise, and bequeath to Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam, a non-profit corporation located at 815 Court Street in Charleston, West Virginia, _______ percent of my estate (or the sum of $__________; or ________ percent of the residue of my estate) as an unrestricted gift.

Giving Tuesday: A Day to Give Back

In November, we have three days for getting deals – Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Now, there is another day gaining momentum: Giving Tuesday – a day for giving back.

On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, charities, families, businesses, and people around the country come together for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.

Giving Tuesday was started in a YMCA in New York six years ago. Today, it has evolved into a global movement that encourages people to give back monetarily and with their time. The day falls after several days of indulgence, including: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. On Giving Tuesday, you are encouraged to donate money to your favorite charities and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. You can also donate goods, like building supplies and furniture – to the ReStore in Charleston and in Teays Valley.

Giving Tuesday is meant to remind people to share their bounty with folks who might not have a decent, affordable place to call home. Event organizers are encouraging people to spend the next month worrying less about what is on their personal Christmas lists and more time encouraging and amplifying small acts of kindness.

Shawn Means, executive director at Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam says that Giving Tuesday is an ideal way for families and individuals to shift their focus from the “commercialized,” sometimes-stressful shopping experiences of Black Friday and Cyber Monday to community members who are in true need of a helping hand.

“That is what this world needs,” Means added. “The world needs people who can wake up and see the people out there who are in need of help. We all need to think about other people.”

Country Singer Chris Stapleton Becomes a Major Habitat Donor

Country Singer Chris Stapleton Makes Surprise Donation to Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam

Country music singer Chris Stapleton surprised local volunteers and board members from Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam with a sizable donation that will enable Habitat to continue its mission of providing affordable housing.

The $10,000 grant from the Outlaw State of Kind Fund was bestowed on the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity through the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, based in Nashville.

“We didn’t know what to think at first; this was an unexpected surprise,” said Shawn Means, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam. Means said the donation came out of the blue.

Right now, Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam is building a community along North Hills Drive in Charleston. Stapleton’s donation will be used to begin construction on Habitat’s 173rd home. That home will be located in the growing North Hills neighborhood.

Stapleton is wrapping up his All-American Road Show tour. The singer’s Charleston concert was rescheduled to November 2nd from its original June date after he sustained a hand injury. Stapleton’s next stop is Columbus, Ohio.

Covestro Donates $50,000 and Helps Build a House

Covestro donates $50,000 and employee labor to help build a house for a local family in partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

This week, employees at Covestro in South Charleston, West Virginia, will join with Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam for a good cause: raising the roof on a new house in Charleston. This “Raise the Roof” project was made possible by a $50,000 donation.

“Covestro has been one of our biggest contributors – supporting our mission both financially, through its generous contributions, as well as through its employees’ donation of time and ‘sweat equity,'” said Shawn Means, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam.

From September 25th through September 30th, employees from Covestro, along with professional leadership from Habitat for Humanity, will work to “Raise the Roof” on the new house. After bringing the structure under roof, the construction effort will continue over several weeks following the normal Habitat for Humanity building schedule.Covestro Logo

The new house will benefit a local family who successfully completes the partnership program required by Habitat for Humanity. In addition to a down payment and zero-interest monthly mortgage payments, Habitat homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor in building their house and the houses of others. In addition to investing their “sweat equity,” the local family selected for this home will also fulfill other requirements, including completion of Habitat’s Master Homeowner Program.

Covestro and Habitat for Humanity of Kanawha & Putnam have a solid, long-standing relationship. Since 2004, Covestro employees have volunteered many hours of work in support of various Habitat for Humanity projects. To date, Covestro has invested nearly a half million dollars toward Habitat’s work in Kanawha and Putnam counties.

Help Us Help a Local Family

We’re working with a couple right now to give them a hand up and get them Home By Autumn.

The couple and their children live in an unsafe part of town in an overcrowded apartment. The building is not a safe haven for kids. There is consistent foot and car traffic outside the main entrance. The family was beginning to lose hope of finding an affordable home after years of bouncing around in small, expensive and problem-ridden apartments.

“I was tired of renting things that would never be mine. It’s difficult and tiring to have to move all of the time.”

Then, one conversation changed the family’s life. They were told about Habitat for Humanity from friends that had attended our regular open-house events. The couple researched the requirements, put in an application and are now approved to earn and own a home of their own.

Both parents tell us that they are proud to be able to provide their family with a more stable environment. “The entire family is excited! My kids don’t have to worry about moving every year or six months when the lease on our apartment ends.”

All of the family members have been working hard to earn their 500 hours of “sweat equity.” As with all of our future homeowners, the family must work towards owning their home before we offer them a zero-interest mortgage. They do this by volunteering on construction crews, working in our ReStores in Charleston and Teays Valley, and volunteering in our administrative office. The kids even get involved by making artwork for our construction volunteers.

Now, it’s almost time for them to have a home to call their own, but construction isn’t done yet.
